Wine

This cat is not disgruntled because it prefers white over red.

In fact, even if the Cat was to have developed a taste for wine- which would be very abnormal, it would still be oblivious to the wines variant in color; as most cats cannot distinguish between shades of white/grey and red.

Putting a glass of wine next to a cat does not indicate that the cat is interested in it.

The cat might be able to tell the difference between the wines because red wine is darker than white wine. Still, it would probably be dangerous for cats to drink wine, for both the cat and its owner.

However if the cat HAD developed a taste for wine (abnormal or otherwise) it would likely be able to taste the difference between a white, such as the well-made Turnbull ‘05 Sauvignon Blanc and a red, like a nice Chateauneuf De Pappe 1989, as cats have an acute sense of smell and taste.

Also, because of these acute senses, the cat would likely have very discriminating tastes.

Actually domestic cats have color vision, albeit very poor color vision. They typically see blue and green, but would have problems distinguishing between red and green. So a cat could tell the difference between a white/clear liquid and a red liquid.

  5. This cat does not appear to be disgruntled at all, much less as a result of a distaste for the particular wine. The wine is probably of minimal interest to the cat, as the odor of such things is often a not-so-subtle indication to stay away (for animals such as cats, in any case), since alcohol has decidedly negative effects in relation to the carrying out of instinctual duties.

All that said, we cannot know for certain what varietal a cat might prefer without studying this. I suspect that, like humans, the preference of any given cat would be particular to the cat in question, though it would be interesting to note trends along breed or other similar groupings of cats. This study, however, would be in poor taste, given that cats should not be fed alcohol.

Dude, you need to chill. Troll was saying that cats shouldn’t be fed alcohol. Because it’s bad for them. You apparently think that you’re clever, so I’m just going to leave it here and laugh every time I see one of your “I’m-trying-way-to-hard-to-be-cool” comments.

Cats, like any other mammal, can learn to “appreciate” alcohol. They won’t be especially interested in wine as such, but some cats will try anything their owner offers them (or anything they see their owner eating/drinking), and that could easily get them started. (Same with beer, whiskey, etc. Dogs are even worse about this, being more omnivorous by nature.)

If you put your wine glass down next to your cat, it probably won’t startle it enough to make it want to vacate the premises. In fact, this particular cat most likely did not pay much attention to the glass other than its initial and short-lived curiosity of an object being placed in front of it.

Our cats LOVE wine, it’s often a challenge to keep them away from our glasses because they will drink it all… and that’s NOT GOOD!

All of my cats have always liked white wine and beer, and two of our cats over the years have really enjoyed red wine.

However, this cat could be one of the ones that can tell the difference or it might smell the difference. So this cat may (very low probability, but let’s just go beyond the impossible and kick reason to the curb for a moment) be angry that it did not get white wine.
