If cats aren’t this big, then this cat is not average, which raises a question of why it is on this site…

Because the left half is a collie and the right half is the close-up of a cat.
It got photoshopped, though you probably already knew that.

Domestic cats aren’t that big. Other feline species can grow to be quite large!

This is a feline of the Maine Coon breed, also known as the largest domestic cat breed. Therefore the caption is false since some cats can and indeed are this big.

  5. Strangeknight says:

Tastethevapor is correct, the Maine Coon can and often does get this big. However, on the fact that the Maine Coon breed is unique, and most every other cat does not get this big, I would have to disagree with the statement that the caption is false, as that one does not routinely come across the Maine Coon, if one ever does at all….

While I respect your post, Strangeknight, The caption states clearly that “Cats aren’t this big.” That means that no cat can possibly at that size (whether or not it is a rare breed). Aren’t is a contraction for the words “are” and “not” which combined means something does not exist. And no, not all cats are this big, but for a statement to not be false, it would have to be 100% true. If it is not, it is false. But to be fair, it could be a generalization. I suppose it is in the eye of the beholder.

In fact, the Maine Coon is not the largest breed of domestic cat, it is in truth the Rag Doll cat.

It’s not photoshopped. You can see the reflection of both halves of the cat in the window.

Yeah, I’ve got a Maine Coon, and he’s just a bit bigger than this one. But he’s so lovable!! No one actually knows the origin of the breed. It’s said that it is a cross between a cat and a raccoon, but that’s quite impossible, and so the other version is that they came from a cross between long haired cats and bobcats. And believe it or not, you run across Maine Coons more than you know. It’s just not so often you find one so huge =]

There is also a breed called the “Savannah” that averages, on the low end, over 20 lbs.

That photo is not doctored. There are many photos of this woman and cat. The woman is very small, and the cat is very big (probably a Maine Coon). It is the proportionate difference that causes the cat to look bigger than it actually is.

You’ve never seen my music teacher’s cat, then. I’ll see if I can get a copy of that photo to put on this site.

A quick googleing on “Maine Coon”, reveals several pictures to support the statements, that this is indeed an unphotoshopped cat

Right, a website dedicated to cats doesn’t know about the Maine Coon, which is not a new breed, although a fairly recent one. Bred as early as the 1860s. Good going. You fail.

The Ringtail (Bassariscus astutus) is a mammal of the raccoon family (thus not actually a cat), native to arid regions of North America. It is also known as the Ringtail cat, Ring-tailed cat or Miner’s cat, and is also sometimes mistakenly called a “civet cat” (after similar, though unrelated, cat-like omnivores of Asia and Africa). The Ringtail is sometimes called a cacomistle, though this term seems to be more often used to refer to Bassariscus sumichrasti.

Sorry guys, but that’s a real picture.
I have a maine coon myself.
and while she is not quite as large as that one.
Her father was about that size, maybe a wee bit smaller

Maine Coon is not the largest cat breed. Nor is the Rag Doll. A Savannah holds the records for longest and tallest cat in the world. Look it up, smart ones.

I have a Maine Coon, but he is much smaller than the one in this image. Still big, though.
Fun fact: the Maine Coon is the second most popular cat breed in the US, after the Persian.

Oh, you and your pedigrees. I’m willing to bet that the Persian is nowhere near as popular as the good ol’ domestic shorthair.

I knew a couple who had a cat about that size. (He was a big fraidy-cat, which was kind of hilarious.) They thought he might be half bobcat; he didn’t have a tail.

Both of my cousins have rescued Maine Coon cats; they’re not particularly rare. I haven’t seen one of their cats since he was about 6 months old, when he was already significantly bigger than my adult cat. And they don’t reach their full growth until about 3 years. The other one isn’t nearly as big as the one in the picture, but since she’s a female, that’s to be expected.
