This cat likely fell asleep on the math book, giving a human the idea to set him up as shown. Although cats sleep for much of the day, the average cat would not stay asleep while a textbook was placed underneath him.
If cats were capable of doing math, my cat would be able to determine that his pile of cat treats has five treats, whereas the other cat’s has only two. If my cat could accomplish this calculation, he would not abandon his obviously larger supply to go steal the two that the other cat still has. This leads me to believe that cats are rather poor at counting.
Furthermore, cats do not have the bone structure to wear human sized glasses, nor do they have the dexterity to use a pencil, even if they understood what a pencil was or what one would be used for.
It’s also possible that a highly-trained chimp could have placed those items there. But the chance of it being unobtrusive enough to not wake the cat is low.
